Battle.net combines a game storefront, account services, and desktop game launching. Its desktop app can install and update supported games, while the website presents games, expansions, digital gifts, news, trailers, and patch notes.

Players can keep a friends list and use messaging or voice chat to coordinate play. Access to a purchased game depends on the correct Battle.net account and completed entitlement; individual games also have their own platform requirements. The download site supplies separate Windows and Mac installers and information about account protection.
